Observational tests of the properties of turbulence in the Very Local Interstellar Medium

چکیده
The Very Local Interstellar Medium (VLISM) contains clouds which consist of partially-ionized plasma. These clouds can be effectively diagnosed via high resolution optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy of the absorption lines they form in the spectra of nearby stars. Information provided by these spectroscopic measurements includes values for ξ , the root-mean-square velocity fluctuation due to turbulence in these clouds, and T , the ion temperature, which may be partially determined by dissipation of turbulence. We consider whether this turbulence resembles the extensively studied and well-diagnosed turbulence in the solar wind and solar corona. Published observations are used to determine if the velocity fluctuations are primarily transverse to a largescale magnetic field, whether the temperature perpendicular to the large scale field is larger than that parallel to the field, and whether ions with larger Larmor radii have higher temperatures than smaller gyroradius ions. We ask if the spectroscopically-deduced parameters such as ξ and T depend on the direction on the sky. We also consider the degree to which a single temperature T and turbulence parameter ξ account for the spectral line widths of ions with a wide range of masses. A preliminary examination of the published data shows no evidence for anisotropy of the velocity fluctuations or temperature, nor Larmor radius-dependent heating. These results indicate differences between solar wind and Local Cloud turbulence. Possible physical reasons for these differences are discussed. Correspondence to: S. R. Spangler ([email protected])

Physical Properties of the Local Interstellar Medium
The observed properties of the local interstellar medium (LISM) have been facilitated by a growing ultraviolet and optical database of high spectral resolution observations of interstellar absorption toward nearby stars. Such observations provide insight into the physical properties (e.g., temperature, turbulent velocity, and depletion onto dust grains) of the population of warm clouds (e.g., 7...
متن کاملSupersonic turbulence and structure of interstellar molecular clouds.
The interstellar medium provides a unique laboratory for highly supersonic, driven hydrodynamic turbulence. We propose a theory of such turbulence, test it by numerical simulations, and use the results to explain observational scaling properties of interstellar molecular clouds, the regions where stars are born.
متن کاملExotic clouds in the local interstellar medium
The neutral interstellar medium (ISM) inside the Local Bubble (LB) has been known to have properties typical of the warm neutral medium (WNM). However, several recent neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption experiments show evidence for the existence of at least several cold diffuse clouds inside or at the boundary of the LB, with properties highly unusual relative to the traditional cold neutral medi...
متن کاملThe elusive structure of the diffuse molecular gas: shocks or vortices in compressible turbulence?
The cold diffuse interstellar medium must harbor pockets of hot gas to produce the large observed abundances of molecular species, the formation of which requires much more energy than available in the bulk of its volume. These hot spots have so far escaped direct detection but observations and modeling severely constrain their phase-space structure i.e. they must have a small volume filling fa...
متن کاملFe b 20 03 WHY STUDY INTERSTELLAR MATTER VERY CLOSE TO THE SUN ?
Interstellar matter (ISM) sets the boundary conditions of the heliosphere and dominates the inter-planetary medium. The heliosphere configuration has varied over recent history, as the Sun emerged from the Local Bubble and entered a turbulent outflow of cloudlets originating from the Scorpius-Centaurus Association direction. Several indicators suggest that the local interstellar magnetic field ...
